Leave No Trace | Scapa Fest Sustainability Manifesto

Developing a sustainable relationship with our environment is at the heart of what we do and that’s why we’ve taken huge steps to make sure Scapa Fest is designed to be respectful and in balance with the environment around it.

Scapa Fest is aiming to be a Low Impact, Zero Waste and Leave No Trace event.

Here’s what we'll be planning for 2018 and over the years to come.

Low Impact

Sustainable Transport

We have a car share scheme in place, along with links to public transport to the event.

Supporting worthwhile causes

With hundreds of people coming through our event, we recognise that it’s a perfect opportunity to help spread awareness and raise valuable support for causes aligned with our manifesto.

We’ll be partnering with charities and organisations who make a positive difference to the environment and communities, such as Surfers Against Sewage, who campaign against plastic.

Truly local food

Argyll is home to an abundance of local producers and talented local businesses. Food From Argyll will provide a catering experience designed to minimise the impact of food miles on the environment.

Setting the example
Scapa Fest is part of Powerful Thinking's #FestivalVision2025, a group of festivals leading the way and driving positive change towards environmental sustainability for festivals.

Zero Waste

We are fully committed to keeping the event site completely free of waste, by encouraging visitors site to carry their waste out when they leave, just as they would when camping in the wild in a responsible way.

We also aim to provide recycling stations for every kind of material, and will have a dedicated Green Team patrolling throughout the weekend reminding people of our Leave No Trace Promise.

Food waste

100% of all leftover edible food at our events will be redistributed to local charities to ensure none of it goes to waste.

We will be supplying visitors with Low Ph soap for use in the showers.

We’ll also be working to minimise environmental impact and protect the natural world, by using composting loos for future Scapa Fest.

Leave No Trace

The Leave No Trace principles are familiar to most wild campers and adventurers. They provide guidance to enjoy our natural world in a sustainable way that avoids human-created negative impacts. We aim to apply them to the festival experience of Scapa Fest.

1// Plan ahead and prepare:

• Use the Scapa Fest packing list provided.
• Prepare for the weather.
• Pack carefully, taking only what is necessary.
• Repackage food to minimise waste.

2// Travel and camp on durable surfaces:

Car share or use public transport as much as possible.
• Good campsites are found, not made. Do not alter the natural surroundings to set up camp.

3// Dispose of waste properly and responsibly:

• Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite for rubbish. Pack out all rubbish for recycling and disposal.
• To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater.

3// Leave what you find:

• Preserve the past: examine, but do not touch cultural or historic structures and artifacts.
• Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them.
• Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.
• Do not build structures, furniture, or dig trenches.

4// Minimise campfire impacts:

• Where fires are permitted, use established BBQ or fire bowls.
• Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.
• Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then scatter cool ashes.

5// Respect Wildlife:

• Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.

6// Be considerate of other visitors:

• Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
• Be courteous.
• Let nature's sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.
We look forward to meeting you by the loch!
